How the ICA Board Works
Ever wondered how members of the Internet Commerce Association’s Board are chosen, or how the Board itself is structured? As the group guiding our advocacy, events, and strategic direction, the Board plays a vital role in shaping the ICA’s work on behalf of the domain investment community. Here’s a quick look at how it all works behind the scenes.
Two Paths to the ICA Board
When the ICA was founded, there was only one membership class: Platinum Membership. At that time, all Platinum Members automatically received a seat on the Board. As the organization grew and new membership levels were introduced, the structure evolved and today, there are two ways to join the ICA Board.
1. Elected by the Community
Representatives of non-Platinum membership classes are elected by their fellow members to serve on the Board. These terms typically last two years. If someone joins partway through an election cycle, their first term may be shorter so that future elections align with the rest of the Board’s schedule.
2. Appointed as a Platinum Representative
New Platinum Members are no longer automatically guaranteed a Board seat. Instead, the current Board must vote to approve both the addition of a new Platinum seat and the individual nominated to represent that member. A recent example is Kevin Doerr, who joined the ICA Board as the representative for Squarespace after going through this approval process.
Leadership That Moves ICA Forward
Whether elected by the community or appointed as a Platinum representative, all Board members share a common goal: helping the ICA protect and advance the interests of domain name investors and the broader domain industry.
They guide our policy priorities, lead key initiatives like UDRP reform, and shape programs and events, including the ICA Annual Member Meeting, which bring our community together.
We’re deeply grateful to every member whose support makes this work possible. Your involvement is what allows the ICA, and its Board, to continue advocating for a fair and vibrant domain ecosystem.
